About the image

These silos were designed to make features of disused wheat silos and and bring people and business into small country towns. I had wanted to take this shot for a long time to capture this unique Australian art work against the Milky Way. The dark country sky allows for a beautiful contrast against the bright colours of the silo and the stars.

This shot took about 3 months of planning to achieve. I planned the shot on site during the day with PhotoPills, I waited for a moonless night, and used https://www.cloudfreenight.com/ to ensure clear skies, before making the 8 hour round trip from home to get this shot, and a time-lapse video of the night sky at the same time.

To light the silos, I used 2 Lume Cubes, which were only on 3% brightness, for the 15 second exposure. This allowed the silos to not look washed out, and allow the stars to remain bright.

A lens warmer was essential to ensure that the lens didn’t fog over.

The silos are unique and amazing, and great to photograph. If we treat them with respect they will remain that way for years to come.
